The Toyota Motor company in Japan is credited with being the inventor of Just in Time (JIT) supply chain management. From the 1970s onwards they reduced inventories, pushed responsibilities for parts supply to the manufacturer and reduced their costs. Systems were established to control all of the inventories and production needs. The result was that by 2008
they were the leading car manufacturer in the world. But in 1997 they received a wakeup call. One of their suppliers was unable to supply valves due to a fire at a factory; one small breakdown of the chain and car production lines stopped then their suppliers’ factories stopped work, JIT had a flaw: sole supplier reliance. Time has marched forward and JIT is now more sophisticated and resilient. What no one planning JIT could have predicted was that in 2020 all manufacturers would be forced to stop at the same time with no restart date.
