The shipping industry will soon be required to take more concrete steps toward reducing carbon emissions than almost any other industry. New international regulations will come into force in 2023 that will require all existing ships to take measurable steps to reduce the quantity and intensity of carbon emissions.
Ships that fail to measure up will face sanctions that may limit their possible trading patterns and the cost of compliance will run into billions of dollars, which will end up being a transaction cost for all international trade.
