overview

Key Learning Objectives

  • Discover the world of metals, what they are and where they are used
  • Become familiar with the language of metallurgy
  • Learn the difference between carbon steels and alloy steels
  • Understand the fundamentals of heat treatment why it’s used and what benefits it provides
  • Find out how metals are strengthened and shaped to provide a wide range of industrial components from sheet metal to forged shafts
  • Develop a knowledge of mechanical behavior of metals and the tests used to determine mechanical properties
  • Understand how metals degrade in service and what inbuilt defects they contain
  • Analysis why some metals resist corrosion and some don’t
  • Gain a comprehensive, practical working knowledge of metals

About the Course

Everything on the planet is made of something! And for most engineering components that ‘something’ is a metal. Everyday engineers go to work to look after metals but often know little about them.

Engineers require a sound basic knowledge of metals if they are going to be able select and buy the right components, undertaken problem solving and failure analysis, undertake maintenance or make engineering changes and for those who want to know how long a component will last.

This course provides that basic working knowledge of metals in a comprehensive and concise form that engineers need. As it is a basic course it is suitable for any engineer working in any industry who would benefit from knowing more about metals.

The course starts at the beginning of the steels story right from ‘what is a metal?’. It builds step-by-step from carbon steels, through alloy steels to stainless steels and non ferrous alloys such as aluminum and copper. Along the way you will learn about how metals are strengthened and heat treated to produce a large range of components with vastly differing mechanical properties.

By the end of the course you will have gained a practical working knowledge of metals, what they are, how they are made, where they are used and how they perform.

Who Will Benefit

The course is ideal for engineers who work in any industry sector and who are responsible for maintenance, solving plant problems, selecting equipment:

  • Mechanical Engineers
  • Electrical Engineers
  • Plant Engineers
  • Maintenance Engineers
  • Asset Managers
  • Maintenance Managers

Testimonials

“An obvious subject matter expert, Maxine was a pleasure to listen to and learn from. Highly engaging and ableto t hrow so much passion into the topic!”
