About the Course

The Balanced Scorecard is a strategic planning and management system that is used to align operational activities with the vision and strategy of an organisation, and to construct performance management systems that work. Successfully applied in small and large businesses, organisations and governments globally, the Balanced Scorecard is best practice modern management.

The Advanced Balanced Scorecard forms Part 2 of the Balanced Scorecard Professional Certification course. (The ‘Introduction to the Balanced Scorecard Course’ is required before taking this course).

This course builds on the introductory knowledge gained in Part 1 (Course 301) by focusing on common scorecard development difficulties and nuances found in real world organisations that have implemented the BSC. It investigates in detail areas such as strategic thinking, practical examples, cascading, budgeting, change management, facilitation evaluation and other advanced topics.

At the completion of Part 1 (Introduction) and Part 2 (Advanced), participants are eligible for Balanced Scorecard Professional Certification offered by the US Balanced Scorecard Institute through its association with the George Washington University College of Professional Studies (exam completion required).

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for people in private, public or non-profit sector organisations who have responsibility for building, implementing and maintaining a scorecard and other performance management systems. Typical attendees include those with responsibilities for implementing and/or maintaining the management system; developing appropriate performance measures; selecting software tools; cascading the scorecard; evaluating or reporting strategic and operational performance data; and/or improving resource allocation decision making.

The Advanced Balanced Scorecard course covers the Balanced Scorecard Institute’s ‘Nine Steps to Success’ ™ Balanced Scorecard Methodology, providing advanced tools and techniques to help managers and analysts to build, deploy and sustain a scorecard system in their organisation.

The course provides a brief review of basic scorecard building steps, adds advanced building techniques and explores in detail areas such as cascading a scorecard system throughout an organisation; and evaluation of the impact of the scorecard system and how to make corrections. The course includes additional focus on change management and strategic facilitation of teams:

Module 2: Advanced Strategic Foundations Development – how to analyse, identify and correct poor strategic foundation design, & migrating from other planning models to the balanced scorecard

Module 3: Advanced Objective & Strategy Map Development – strategic objective and strategy map best practices

Module 4: Advanced Performance Management – How to use several frameworks, such as the Logic Model, the Decision Model and the Critical Question model to develop a family of potential measurements for each objective

Module 5: Advanced Measurement Definition, Implementation & Visualisation

Module 6: Advanced Strategic Initiative Prioritisation & Management

Module 7: Advanced Scorecard Alignment & Cascading – How to build organisational alignment through advanced cascading techniques
